Harris wants to go out on top

Robert Harris should be one of many softball players chasing fresh kudos in 2012.

Roughly two months ago, he fell short of a championship with the PWC Legion of Boom. The side lost in the title game to KM Ltd in extra innings. With a new season set to start, Harris’ focus is on earning bragging rights.

“First of all we have a great sponsor in PWC,” Harris said. “All of our cheques and balances are accounted for, the fourth quarter stats last year were impressive and the shareholders should be pleased.

“Personally, there is nothing like going out on top. I won’t say if I do I’ll retire but I’ll have to think about it.”

Last November Harris captained the PWC Legion of Boom to a regular season crown in the Fall Adult Co-ed Softball League. PWC had a 10-2 record in the competition, put on by the Cayman Islands Little League at the Field of Dreams facility in George Town. Harris served as starting pitcher and had support from notable players like Chris Orlandini, Bradimir Robinson and multi-sport athlete Scott Murray.

The 2012 Spring league is slated to start this week and PWC is expected to contend for A league props once again. PWC will look to emulate last year’s other winners in the Glovernauts and The Security Centre Safes. In 2011 the Glovernauts defeated the Maples Sluggers for the B league crown while the Safes won their second straight C league title by crushing the Billy Bones Jager Bombers.

In addition to beating KM and earning an A league title, the Legion of Boom’s focus is on producing more wins over perennial champions Home Gas. The green machine has won eight championships in the last 12 years behind stalwarts Tony Coe, Peter Whittaker and Ryan Ebanks. Harris states beating the reigning dynasty is a good litmus test.

“We beat Home Gas twice in the regular season last season. We beat them by three the first time and by like 18 runs the second time. They are a measuring stick for everyone in softball. You have to beat the best to be the best.

“A victory over Home Gas is cherished. They are that good. Historically they are the best team and everyone takes it serious when you face them.”
