Singh’s Roti Shop recently earned fresh props in the world of Cayman Islands dominoes.
The local team won the Jacques Scott domino tournament at the Mango Tree. Taking place over the Heroes Day holiday weekend, Roti was one of roughly seven squads that compete in the Cayman Islands Domino Association 2012 national league.
Roti rose to the top thanks to stellar showings from Don Myles, Robert Thompson and Corrue Farquharson. A depleted East End Mystical Youth side still managed to finish second behind stalwarts Brent Greene, Kelsey Greene and Kirby Powell.
Team DLK placed third behind the likes of Sheena Taylor, Kristin Williams and flag football player Richard Allen. Rounding out the top four was Archies, who had good showings from players such as John Jobson. Among the other competing teams was Island All Stars, who had players like Derek Elliott Senior and current association president Ray McLaughlin.
Dorando Smith starred for Sea Inn bar in the competition, which had other players like Kael Leslie and Jamie McLaughlin. Though his side placed out of the top four, Smith states it was a good event.
“It was an excellent competition, I hope it goes on as a planned thing and keeps going every year,” Smith said. “It wasn’t fair in that Mango Tree held the tournament last year. Other places should get a chance. It generates business for the bars, that’s a fact.
“I wish Jacques Scott would put in more and the association could put on one tournament every month. A lot of people don’t know dominoes is something that people love in Cayman. We need more media coverage to show the kids it’s very fun and enjoyable.”
Although East End did not win the tournament, they continued their unbeaten form in league play. Mystical Youth destroyed sister team Eastern Star by 93 points last Saturday, the highest margin of victory by a team since the league began. Leading the Mystical Youth onslaught were Jimmy Thompson and Foster McLean. Eastern Star’s best players were Syd Parsons and Matthew McLaughlin.
League play is slated to resume this Sunday, 29 January. Sea Inn is expected to host Kellys at Sea Inn bar while Archies face off against Eastern Star at Archies Bar.
