Scholars intent on closing gap

Premier League football matches on Sunday throw up some interesting clashes.

The much improved Cayman Athletic take on Tigers in the early game at Bodden Town playing field. Tigers caused an upset last week by beating the previously undefeated Scholars International 1-0 thanks to a goal by Miguel Simms, his seventh of the campaign. Cayman Athletic drew with Elite 0-0 last weekend having been thrashed 10-1 by the league champions three months earlier.

Scholars International defender Phillip Berry said: “We conceded against Tigers from one mistake. The ball was played back to our keeper Whacky but he mis-judged how fast and close Simms was who got the ball off him. We had 25 shots on goal but just couldn’t finish.

Roma United face Bodden Town in the 7pm game. It is a dress rehearsal for the following week when the teams meet again in the second leg of the Digicel Cup semis. Bodden Town won the first leg 2-1 although Roma led for most of the game, so there will be some psychological games going on. The matches at the TE McField Annex are between Elite and George Town at 5pm and Scholars International and Future at 7pm. Berry added: “We have to get three points against Future. They may be the bottom club but they’re still good so we can’t take them for granted.”

Elite have found the net 32 times in 13 games but they couldn’t break through the Cayman Athletic defence last time out. Elite have in Dwayne ‘Gaza’ Wright the league’s top scorer with 14 and Alex Belcher has hit seven. Yefry Calderon of Bodden Town is the second top scorer in the league with nine goals.
