Run across da Island

Runners and early risers are certainly kept busy in the first few weeks of the year, with races, fun runs and relays taking place almost every weekend. Those trying to stick to any New Year’s resolutions that involve getting more exercise and doing something charitable have no excuse for not taking part – and the cooler winter temperatures are ideal for running.

The next big sporting event of the year is the Cross Island Relay, organsied by the Hash House Harriers, which takes place on Sunday, 5 February.

Starting from Gun Bay in East End before the sun comes up, runners will be making their way westwards, to finish at Smith Cove before most people are even awake.

It’s a fair distance – almost a marathon, but because it is run by teams of six each person only completes four miles – an achievable goal for almost anyone. This is an event organised by runners for runners so, although walking is permitted, walking the entire course is not really the point, and because each team member must complete their leg in under 50 minutes, walking the four miles might be cutting it a bit fine.

The race beings at 6am and awards will be given out at 10am at Smith Cove.

All teams must register beforehand either online at www.caymanactive.com or the day before at Camana Bay. Registration is $90 per team. Any profits will be donated to a local charity.
