The Cayman Islands Olympic Committee sent Dr Dalton Watler, Deputy Chief Officer for Tourism, to St. Vincent last week for a two day course for him to qualify as a trainer of trainers. It was a course conductor course. He will not be teaching sports per se, but teaching coaches the principles of training. Through Watler coaches will learn how to pass on tips to be role models, advise on diet, physiology, how to best prepare for an event and how to actually teach a particular sport.
It is intended for people who already have qualifications in coaching. For example, if a coach already has a qualification to teach boxing, this course will qualify him or her to plan how to develop speed or endurance. “Many coaches have the basic information,” said Watler. “But this information we have here will enhance their knowledge. It will make them better coaches and in the end we will have better athletes.
“Most of the athletes in the Cayman Islands when they have a problem in life most of the time the first person they look for is the coach because the daddy figure is not there. When they get into trouble, who do they call? It’s the coach. This is a type of course that is going to be very helpful for the coaches and athletes.”
