Carias propels Rising Stars B

Cayman Islands netball seems primed for a power shift and two clubs looking to gain ground are All Stars and Rising Stars.

Both squads were in action at the netball courts at Truman Bodden Sports Complex last Saturday. All Stars A, sponsored by Central Cooling, maintained top billing with a 26-13 victory over the Tortuga Flames Strikers while Rising Stars B downed Unity B 23-12.

Alexis Carias, 14, carried the RS offence early on and had a good showing. The Bodden Town native, who was raised in North Side and has been playing netball since year four in primary school, states the victory is a sign of more things to come.

“We played good, we won as a team and everything played out good in the end,” Carias said. “I think Unity gave us a good run to the end. If we play like how we did on Thursday night, with all of our effort, we should come out with more victories. We possibly can come out with a first or second place (finish).”

The result was never in doubt for RS. Lexie Solomon played well on offence, making most of her shots. Shanai Allen steadied play from centre-court and defensively the likes of Gelyssa Rankin stifled Unity’s shot attempts.

The AS encounter had a little more intrigue as both teams were undefeated. AS claimed their second victory of the campaign thanks to an unwavering offence starring Pauline Bodden. The role players stepped up for the most part, especially Katherine Maw and Kimesha Walters on the wing.

Flames put up a good effort behind attacking player Latoya Nixon. However Wayne Brown’s defence could not stand up to the AS pressure.

AS veteran Lyneth Monteith states her squad expects to be a contender going forward.

“The team still has a lot to work on and I anticipate us improving steadily as we go through the season,” Monteith said. “The win on Saturday was expected though.”

AS A next play on Thursday, 9 February, at 6.30pm against Unity B. RS B battle on 3 March while Flames play on 23 February.
