Anglers support marine research

The local fishing community recently showed its support for Guy Harvey’s conservation efforts.

The Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation received a cheque for US$2,000 from the Cayman Islands Angling Club. The funds were raised during the Barcadere Classic fishing tournament last month.

Harvey expressed his appreciation for the donation.

“The funds raised here in the Cayman Islands will be spent on marine research and education projects here in Cayman such as grouper conservation, research work on stingrays and sharks as well as tracking the migrations of blue marlin and wahoo,” Harvey said.

Also on hand for the cheque presentation was Neville Scott from the Scott Group, the organization that owns George Town’s Barcadere Marina, the site of the Barcadere Classic. A number of big catches were made during the tournament. A 93.5 pound tuna, the competition’s heaviest catch, was reeled in by the I and I crew of Waylon Bush, Franklin Kerr and Stephen Ebanks. Eric Maierhofer on Run Around reeled in the tournament’s heaviest wahoo at 67.7lbs.

Behind him in the wahoo segment were Rob Jones of Strikeforce with a 67.2lb catch and Simon Wetherell of Team Tukka with a 63.1lb fish. Daniel Kirkconnell of Blue Diamond had the heaviest dolphin at 27.9lbs. Leon Dilbert of Miss Nyah was second at 25.5lbs.

Franklin Thompson, president of the angling club, states the decision to support Harvey is about protecting the future of fishing.

“The angling club is committed to conservation and promoting responsible angling practices to ensure our sport can be sustained for future generations,” Thompson said. “We are pleased to offer support to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation as these funds will be used for local research which will aide us in managing and caring for our marine environment. Our goal is to continue our partnership with the Barcadere Marina and the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation and expand our contribution in the future.”
