Time for a Little Mardi Gras

The costumes are being designed, the floats are being built and Little Cayman is getting ready for its Mardi Gras.

The annual Mardi Gras festival may be held on Cayman’s littlest island but it promises to offer the biggest fun with its partying, float parade and this year’s royal theme.

Each year, the event raises money for the Little Cayman National Trust.

Bob and Suzy Soto are this year’s King and Queen and their chosen theme for the Mardi Gras parade is “A Royal Family” to tie in with Queen Elizabeth’s Jubilee this year.

The first Little Cayman Mardi Gras was held in 1993 and was started by the inimitable Gladys Howard at Pirates Point. Everyone on the Island seems to get involved and there have been times when there have been as many people in the parade as there have been watching it.

“It draws a lot of attention from both Cayman Brac and Grand Cayman, as well as from tourists from many countries,” said Betty Bua, chairperson of the Little Cayman National Trust.

This year’s Mardi Gras is being held on Saturday, 18 February.

The float parade brings out the creative, the wacky and the wonderful each year and this year should be no different. The parade starts at 4pm at Head O’ Bay and will be followed by an awards ceremony outside the Hungry Iguana.

Then it’s onto the Southern Cross Club to kick off the evening festivities, which include a masquerade party. Dinner will be served at 6.30pm at the resort, at $25 per person, with all the proceeds going to the National Trust.

After dinner, local group HiTide will play at the Southern Cross Club.
