Jetski racers should be extra busy this summer.
The Cayman Islands Watercraft Association has a trio of meets planned and before that, the group plans to have a presence at a major overseas event.
The group staged its 2012 season opener last month in South Sound and, weather permitting, there are races planned for 3 June at Public Beach, 29 July at Kaibo and 26 August at South Sound. Before that, the association will see riders participate in the International Jet Sports Boating Association National Tour Round One in Panama Beach, Panama City on 19-20 May. In addition, Jet Around Cayman takes place as usual in mid-June.
A number of riders have started the year well. Kyle Brooks of the Tony’s Toys racing team won the beginner class, edging out newcomer Courtney Wisdom and Chad McField. Youngster Vanjae ‘VJ’ Ramgeet took the novice class crown ahead of Tony’s Toys racer Luke Welds and Douglas ‘Papi’ Gibson.
Javier Medina sliced through a loaded amateur class, nipping Jordan McLaughlin and Paul Rosseau Junior in the process. Jason Bush of Tony’s Toy’s grabbed the expert title ahead of Gary ‘GJ’ Whittaker and 2011 champion Roshad Goff, also of Tony’s Toys.
A total of eight teams took part last month. This year’s races are under the leadership of new association president George “Lulu” Smith. Meets are broken down into four classes in Beginner Stock, Novice Limited, Amateur Open and Expert Modified.
