Flloyd gets grip of new duties

There are many forms of combat sport in the Cayman Islands but never before grappling – until now.

Flloyd Moxam is the new manager of Rogue Gym on the West Bay Road, in front of CrossFit Seven Mile. He has introduced grappling to the gym and there are a few enthusiastic fighters.

Rogue’s previous manager Lachie Hewitt organised a ‘smoker’ event along with promoter Chris Dinan in February where their boxers fought before a crowd there to generate gymn funds. Moxam is considering putting on a repeat show. At the smoker there was an exhibition grappling bout between Jeffrey Jackson and James Smith which was well received.

“We are planning another event to take place within the next few weeks,” he said. “We haven’t decided whether it’ll be another smoker or big event.

“You can look forward to seeing a few of the regulars from the local fight scene as well as some rookies. We would also like to have representatives from various martial arts gyms and schools around the island competing. We haven’t locked in any fighters yet but welcome anyone interested in participating to come down to the gym and sign up.”

Moxam is not just training fighters but preparing himself for a contest too, in Las Vegas in the summer.

“I’m currently training for the Grapplers Quest Tournament at the Ultimate Fighting Championship Fan Expo that is the lead up to the Anderson Silva versus Chael Sonnen rematch on 7 July.

“I won a gold medal last year at the Grapplers Quest in Toronto which was one of the largest tournaments in North American history. I’m also coaching two members of the gym to compete as well. We are currently looking for sponsors for the trip.”
