Donald Francis may be busy racking up kudos abroad but his brother Steven Francis is not far behind in Cayman.
Steven was named the points champion for 2011 by the Cayman Islands Drag Racing Association. The group presented the North Side native with a trophy at their awards ceremony last week at Grand Pavilion.
Association press officer Michael Webster spoke about the presentation.
“We just wanted to say thank you to all the association volunteers,” Webster said. “Without those guys, this would have never happened. We gave away quite a few awards. Steven was the points champion for cars while Humberto Rives was the points champion for bikes.
“We also gave out a Most Valuable Person award to Rudy K (for manning the timing system), a spirit award went to Jesse Powell and the award for dedication went to Cliff Weeks, as many times as he broke he always fixed and raced the same day.”
Steven, 20, competed last year during association meets in a Honda Integra Type-R. While the car was not the fastest or a regular winner, it earned accolades for consistently competing. Rives earned his honour on a Suzuki Hayabusa in a heavily-contested division starring Dante ‘Ross’ Hydes on his Suzuki GSX-R1000. Weeks, known for his connection to darts, raced in a yellow Mitsubishi Evolution III.
News of the gathering comes after Breakers Speedway and drag racing returned to local motorsports. After seemingly closing for good last December, owner Robert Campbell was unable to sell the facility and granted permission for Joe Myrie to stage a meet on the 1/8 mile track.
Webster stated briefly that the association intends to stay active.
“On behalf of association, I’d like to thank everyone who participated in racing and also volunteering. We hope that one day, the association will be given the opportunity to keep racing and doing drag meets.”
