Circumnavigating the Globe, the exhibition of works by Caymanian artist Bendel Hydes draws to a close on 31 May.
Before the first temporary exhibition at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands facility is taken down, residents will have a chance to meet the man behind the paintings. The event takes place on Tuesday, 29 May at 6pm.
Mr. Hydes, who is visiting from New York, will be talking about his techniques and inspirations, answering questions and sharing ideas.
Mr. Hydes was born in the Cayman Islands and attended Liverpool and Canterbury Colleges of Art in England, as well as Clark University in Massachusetts. In 1982, he settled in lower Manhattan where his life and work absorbed each other’s poetry and found a harmony reflected in the works exhibited. Mr. Hydes’ paintings from the collection of Alan and Karen Turner glow with a smooth warmth, absorbing and reflecting light from their sinuous brush paths and quirky shapes.
“I use the language of translucent and biomorphic abstraction to explore ways in which nature and culture interact,” says the artist. “I aim to address such issues as topographical changes, isolation, beauty, vulnerability …”
Bendel Hydes’ exhibition Circumnavigating the Globe will end two days after the talk, on 31 May, and a new temporary exhibition on Cayman’s maritime heritage will open the following week.
