The opening of a new school building at George Town Primary School took place on Thursday, 17 May in front of hundreds of well-wishers, dignitaries, students and staff.
Principal Marie Martin said she was happy the school was chosen first for the addition, “as the promises of the building being completed have gone on since just after Hurricane Ivan.” She pointed out that other schools would soon follow.
The new building will house nine classrooms, as well as a music room.
Cayman Islands Premier McKeeva Bush told the group of onlookers the global challenges require an agenda focusing on education in order to restore long-term fiscal responsibility. “Education will help our people compete globally,” Mr. Bush said. He said the building was only possible because of the “workable” plan that was brought to him by Education Minister Rolston Anglin, whom he praised as a visionary in the field of education.
Mr. Anglin has implemented several successful programmes during his time as education minister. Some of these include the Passport2Success programme, which has been exposing at risk youth to skills that empower them in the work place and every day life. Another programme that has been launched under the watch of Minister Anglin and his team includes the after school programmes in the Primary Schools, which have been giving children much needed attention between the hours of 3 to 5pm. New gradation requirements for high school students are another way in which Mr. Anglin’s vision can be seen.
