Rising Stars ended another netball season as runners-up.
The A team beat All Stars B, sponsored by Cayman National Bank, 54-37 last Thursday at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex netball courts. The match served as the third place game in the elimination round of the Cayman Islands Netball Association 2012 open league.
Orvin Palacio serves as head coach and states his squad had a good showing this season.
“The 2012 season has been an eventful one,” Palacio said. “The A team, though heavily underestimated, had a very good showing this season. The ladies worked very hard together and their effort showed with their performance on the court.
“The playoffs are ongoing and our girls have worked very hard this season. We saw so much improvement in the skill levels of our players. We can only continue to rise from here.”
Suiting up for RSA was Goal Shooter Marcia Moiten, Goal Attack Rosemarie Wilson, Wing Attack Tricia Skyers-Palacio, Centre Casy Swaby, Wing Defence Britney Rose, Goal Defence Tara Ramoon, Goal Keeper Patrice Boothe with Wendy Evans as the sub. All would propel the side to advantages of 17-9, 17-4, 9-6 in the first three quarters.
All Stars would field Karen Smith-James (GS), Tishelle Logan (GA), Liana Benjamin (WA), Charlotte Sheperd (C), Jane Sinclair (WD), Benecia Mullings (GD), Megan Hurlston (GK) with Marsha Allen and Leslie-Ann Bernard as subs.
The win means RS finished third overall for the second straight season. The B team was in contention for the consolation prize at the start of the week, as their opening round encounter with Unity A was slated for Tuesday. The winner faces the Flames Strikers in the finale on Saturday, 2 June, while the loser battles Unity B on Thursday, 31 May, at 6.30pm.
Palacio states both the A and B sides made the club proud.
“The B team was proud to have the most number of Under-23 players in the league. The latter part of the season was interesting as there were a number of strong teams who were all vying for the top spot.
“We the coaches are very appreciative of all of our players. They respect our guidance and respond with mutual commitment to our club mandate. Rising Stars players are truly ‘rising stars’ in every sense of the term. They continue to work at improving themselves and their game and are committed to working very hard for their club.”
