Down at the Paseo in Camana Bay, there’s some music a-comin.
Yep, from 7 to 10pm on Friday, 7 September, you can git down, pardner, to the pure Country & Western sounds of Cayman’s own Gone Country – for free. Bob Moseley tells Weekender all about it.
“Outdoor venues, and especially Camana Bay are great because the crowd has plenty of room to dance, wander around and shop or just sit and enjoy a cold drink while they listen to the music,” he says. “Playing Cayman Moon outdoors while the sun goes down and the moon rises never grows old.”
As well as Bob on guitar and vocals, the band also features Blake Hurlston on bass guitar and vocals, Chris Hanni on lead guitar, Don Foster on drums and vocals and Richard Addlestone on fiddle.
“We also have Jen Schulli joining us on vocals,” explains the main man.
The band plays a mix of traditional country and new country music as well as some original tunes such as Cayman Moon and Little Island Girl and Bob says that as far as crowd-pleasers go, the band always performs some Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Alan Jackson and George Strait. One unlikely Cayman favourite is Blind Love.
“Cayman crowds love to hear it, which is an oddity as it’s such a traditional style country song, but it was written by Tom Waits and made famous by rocker Bob Seger,” says the guitar man.
Nashville, Tennessee
The band started in 1995 after Bob realised that there was a discrepancy between Cayman’s traditional love of country music and the lack of bands playing the genre live.
“Having come to Cayman from my hometown of Nashville, Tennessee I was naturally thrilled to be able to play the music I love and grew up with for an appreciative audience.
“Our first gig was at Royal Palms and over the years we have played many venues throughout all three Cayman Islands and have shared the stage with the likes of Tanya Tucker, T.G Shepherd, Paul Overstreet and Kenny Rogers, as well as with our buddies Andy Martin and Barefoot,” Bob says.
As the band does not have a regular live music venue to call home, the Camana Bay appearance is a good chance to catch them. Indeed, Bob rates the venue as a good one to showcase Cayman’s live acts.
At the moment, Gone Country is working on new music and Bob advises people to keep their ears out for new material hitting the radio soon. Any last thoughts, pardner?
“God bless the Cayman Islands and live country music.
“YeeHaw!!!”
