Las Chicas Rolands are comıng to Cayman

Celebrating the independence of Honduras is gonna be done in the most exceptional style with the famed Las Chicas Rolands the central attraction.

Yes, folks, on Friday, 14 September the Mango tree is the place to be as the No. 1 band in Central America headlines a mighty line up all set to get the party rocking.

The band features eight young female performers, all from Honduras. Their style is Punta fusion, a unique genre originating in their home country. The style is a call-and-response based Garifuna music and dance energy, which is often performed at fiestas and on special occasions throughout Central America. The explosion of Punta rock has been notable during the past 30 years and these days fuses rock and traditional instrumentation. Traditionally, the lyrics are composed by women and each song has plenty of meaning. Couples try and out-dance each other with seductive and stylistic elements to the fore.

Las Chicas Rolands will be going all out to prove that their hips just don’t lie – this is a great chance to see some of the top performers in the genre, guys.

Of course there are other people performing on the night. Brown Sugar (aka Luis) and Company are well known for a fusion of Soca, Reggae, Merengue, Bachata and Salsa; D-Docta is Cayman and Honduras’ most popular Latin DJ and MC. He’s bringing a mix of videos, music and lights.

DJ Juice is billed as “Cuba’s wildest DJ in Grand Cayman”, whilst DJ Lokera comes straight from Miami and spins the hottest Reggaeton, Salsa, Merengue, Punta and Bachata tunes. Talking of Reggaeton, Cayman group Big JD and Silencio lay claim to being the first and only purveyors of that style in the islands so that has to be worth catching.

Independence and fiestas

Honduras became independent from Spain on 15 September, 1821, a date which is always passionately celebrated. It is marked by three days of celebrations in the inimitable way of our near-neighbours. Links between the Cayman Islands and Honduras go back centuries with both destinations having a large amount of seafaring, fishing and trading in common. Indeed, many from Cayman have visited or settled in the Bay Islands over the years and vice versa. The Mango Tree bash therefore follows in a great tradition and should be a whole lot of fun.

The night is hosted by Le Bambino and a fashion show is also scheduled which will feature Expressions and Impressions Salon.

Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 on the gate and available from Vibe 98.9FM, Mango Tree, Expressions and Impressions Salon. Promotional partners include Guinness, Cayman Airways, What’s Hot, Tropicana Tours, Signs of Paradise, VIBE 98.9 FM and event organiser, Monster Media. The night is also part of the celebrations for the forthcoming launch of the Spanish-language radio station, Kaliente FM.
