This year’s Right to Know Week theme is “It’s Yours … Just Ask”, and the Cayman Islands Information Commissioner’s Office will be sending the message that obtaining information from public authorities is simple and anyone can make a request in writing, including by e-mail.
From 22-29 September, Right to Know Week aims to educate the public and encourage people to learn about the Freedom of Information Law, which allows public access to government-held records in order to promote accountability and transparency.
“Everyone should take advantage of the opportunities provided by the Law,” said Information Commissioner Jennifer Dilbert. “If you want to know information in Government that pertains to you, FOI helps immensely.”
A variety of events including a church service, a Health Services Authority meet and greet, a dress down day, informational booths at Market at the Grounds and the Government Administration Building, will allow civil servants and the wider public alike to indulge in the week-long activities. On International Right to Know Day, 28 September, the Cayman Islands will join 60 other countries to celebrate the use of FOI and stress the importance of government accountability. ICO staff will also be on hand this day at the Government Administration Building to promote Right to Know Week throughout the Cayman Islands.
In support of this day, the public is also encouraged to wear blue.
Ms Dilbert urges all sectors, public and private, to learn more about the benefits of FOI.
