Almost half of the respondents to last week’s cayCompass.com online poll who commute to George Town have found the morning traffic somewhat or much lighter than in previous school years since the opening of the Clifton Hunter High School in Frank Sound two weeks ago.
Of the 389 total respondents, 85 of them – 21.8 per cent – said they don’t commute to George Town. Of the remaining 304 respondents, 40 of them (13.4 per cent) said they found the morning traffic much lighter than in previous school years and 103 of them (26.5 per cent) said they found the morning traffic somewhat lighter than before.
“Still, coming into George Town via South Sound Road last Wednesday, the traffic was backed up to the Walkers Road junction, probably because of the early-arriving cruise ships,” said one person. “But other days of the week, it did seem to be somewhat lighter.”
“The traffic might be lighter, but the number of idiots on the road who either don’t know how to drive or know how and just don’t care to do it is about the same,” said someone else.
“Thank God the new school has helped to ease the traffic coming into and going out of George Town,” said another person. “That new school should have been built from at least 15 years ago. I feel sure this must be a big relief for both the parents and school children not having to travel into George Town as the students are now able to attend school much closer to their homes. Thanks to Alden McLaughlin’s foresight in having this school built to accommodate those students who definitely needed it most.”
The largest segment of respondents – 125 people or 41.1 per cent of those who commute to George Town – said the traffic was about the same as it was before.
“There is more traffic earlier in the mornings now,” said one person.
Thirty-six people – 11.84 per cent of those who commute to George Town – said the morning traffic is heavier now than in previous school years.
“There are so many speeding dump trucks heading to and from the quarry right now that traffic is bad and dangerous for everywhere,” said one person. “Where are the police after that PR exercise in making our roads safer? This is the worst I have ever seen our roads. These drivers seem immune to traffic laws and many of these trucks are in poor condition.”
“Traffic at Cayman Prep High School is markedly worse, which is a Cayman Prep High School problem, not a Clifton Hunter High School problem,” another person said. “The needless detour though their carpark is disruptive as can be observed each morning.”
“Trucks carrying fill are a bigger problem than school buses ever were,” said someone else. “They speed and drop stuff and honk at each other. They should be banned from Crewe Road and made to use the Linford Pierson Highway.”
“So much for all the benefits of those huge expensive schools,” said one person. “Alden should be ashamed of himself.”
