Masters will show Messi skills

Football’s popularity continues to grow in the Cayman Islands so it is no surprise that senior players who think they can imitate Lionel Messi, only a little slower, are reviving the masters league to kick off next month.

A few players contacted Bodden Town MLA Dwayne Seymour about trying to organise a masters league and subsequently a group of them met a few months ago. Those who met Seymour were Antonio Smith, Alfredo Whittaker, Brian Watler, Peterkin Berry, Lee Ramoon, Barry Martinez, Billy McLaughlin and Greg Ebanks.

At the meeting they agreed that it would be an over 40 years league, with the inclusion of no more than four over 35-year-old players per team.

The organisers are looking for additional teams to join.

“We propose to start the league on Wednesday 3 October and be played every Wednesday and Sunday until its end on Sunday 21 October,” said Seymour. “There will be two trophies – a Masters League trophy and a Masters FA Cup. I must highlight that we are looking for sponsors for this event and anyone willing to do so may contact any of the numbers published.

“One of the reasons to have a vibrant masters league is to enhance the life of retired players, as it benefits their health tremendously.”

The league points will come from the games played on 3, 7, 10, 14, 17 October and the FA Cup winner will come from a round robin on 21 October. The games will be played at the TE McField Annex and West Bay Ed Bush fields.

There is a meeting on Tuesday 25 September.
