Maples pounce late on Wanderers

With two of the top three teams dropping points this weekend in the Heineken Sunday League, the top of the league table now has a congested look with only four points separating the leading four teams.

With only six league games to play, any one of the four teams could eventually lift the league trophy come May.

League leaders going into the weekend were Triple Crown Wanderers, who faced fourth place Maples Revolution at the TE McField Annex. The game turned out to be a classic case of smash-and-grab for Maples.

Wanderers took the lead on 22 minutes via a fortuitous cross that eluded the Maples keeper and floated into the far corner.

Maples struck back five minutes later when a loose, bouncing ball was headed in by Colm Flannagan.

In the last three minutes, Maples broke up field and James Plowright scored for a 2-1 victory.

At Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay, Harry’s were making the most of Wanderers dropped points as they recorded a victory against CML Claymores to go top.

In an evenly contested game, stout defending by the Claymores’ back line, in particular from goalkeeper Ryan Ebanks, kept the game scoreless and CML in the match until the final 10 minutes.

Then Harry’s striker Floyd “Irons” McKenzie put the Claymores to the sword with a brace, the first a fine shot from 25 yards.

Third in the table, Agua also dropped points against Shellaz at the TE McField Annex.

Shellaz turned in another strong performance and led by two goals heading into the last 20 minutes. Their goals, one in each half, came from Jason Baker and the other from Anthony Allen.

This seemed to awaken Agua, who pulled one back through striker Dan Cummings’ eighth of the season when he lobbed the keeper from what looked like an impossible angle for a fantastic goal.

Then teammate Patrick Kathiari hit an exceptional strike to level the game at 2-2 and a share of the points.

Old Boys got only their second win of the season by defeating Latitude 19 Boca Juniors, 4-2.

Coming off the back of a confidence boosting 4-0 victory in the Cup last week, Old Boys went ahead in the third minute through Craig Arthur.

Tommy Gribbin then struck the first of two goals as a shell-shocked Boca found themselves two down at the break.

After halftime, Boca pulled a goal back with Henry Mitchell’s 13th of the season, and then the Old Boys defence had to weather some pressure before Primo Castellan struck an impressive third for his side after 63 minutes. Then Gribbin hit his second before Boca’s Ardin “Cheeky” Rivers got a consolation goal.

McKenzie’s brace puts him in the lead for the Golden Boot Award with 14, one ahead of Boca’s Mitchell.
