Two new suspected dengue cases reported

The Cayman Islands Public Health Department reported this week that two new suspected cases of dengue fever are being investigated.

One case has also been confirmed as dengue since the last public update as of 16 February.

So far this year, 42 cases of suspected dengue have been investigated. Last year, since September when the first case of the year was reported, 94 cases were investigated.

One of the new suspected cases, reported during the week of 17-23 February, involves a resident from Bodden Town and the other is from George Town.

In the past week, the Public Health Department has received 11 results from the Caribbean Public Health Agency. One was positive for dengue, with the onset on 25 January.

A total of 42 of the cases investigated since September 2012 have shown positive results for dengue, 75 were negative and four were inconclusive. The results of 15 are still pending.

Of the 42 confirmed cases, 12 reported a travel history to countries where dengue is endemic and 30 had no travel history, suggesting that they acquired the dengue locally.

Of the confirmed cases 32 were in West Bay, six in George Town and four in Bodden Town.
