Creative recycling for children

Children attending the recent Red Sky at Night event engaged in some creative recycling, thanks to the Visual Arts Society and Baraud Corporation.

Baraud Corporation donated 450 promotional mugs it received, which unfortunately bore a misprint, to VAS. VAS had organised a children’s table for the event and so the society was able to have children incorporate the mugs into their creative efforts.

“We put the coffee mugs to good use. Otherwise the items would have been discarded in some way. Recycling is important and there is so much you can do with so many items that go to waste,” said Mary McCallum, marketing coordinator of VAS.

The children enjoyed decorating the mugs with magazine images, feathers, tissue, and glitter. Over the course of the evening, about 100 children gathered around the VAS Kids activity table to decorate their own mug, which they then were able to take home.

“I’m thrilled they enjoyed the activities,” Ms McCallum said.

She will be organising an after school camp from end of March. One of the goals of the after school art and craft camp is to make use of items that would normally be thrown away.

“It’s amazing what you can do with so many items that we just throw in the trash,” Ms McCallum said. “It’s great for the children to be aware of the waste that our society creates. They can benefit from making a creation from one of those items and learn how important that can be for the community, and they can further learn about the importance of recycling.”

Ms McCallum hopes to find other uses for the mugs, which she can use at the after school art camp, as well as other items that the society has been collecting to use as material for crafts.
