Cassianne’s Wolves lead the pack

The Wolves have early bragging rights on the court.

The green team sits atop the Cayman Islands Basketball Association 2013 National Women’s League, sponsored by Popeye’s Chicken. The Wolves are now 2-0 after a 58-49 victory over Home Gas Flames, the reigning two-time champions.

Leading the squad has been new head coach Randy Myles, who states the win came down to defence.

“We missed a lot of shots and lay-ups but defence was our main focus,” Myles said. “In the first game of the season, Sade Wood was not there and in this game, she came out. We intended to lock her down. We locked down our defence because defence wins games.”

As Myles states, there were some players making their first appearances of the season last Thursday. Sade Wood of Home Gas, now 0-2, stormed Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Centre looking to continue her stellar play from 2012. For the Wolves, Kristen Kuzyk battled in the post for the first time.

Aside from Wood, Flames head coach Bruce Reynolds relied on contributions from Gemma Graelis, Lauri Webster and Alessandra Hawkins. The Wolves, under Myles and assistant coach Duran ‘Trinni’ Whittaker, would enjoy strong showings from captain Cassianne Lawrence, Theresa Hamil and newcomer Carmen Picate.

Last Thursday’s other result saw Welly’s Cool Spot defeat Island Heritage Silver Mist 65-54. Both squads are now 1-1 in the standings. Rochelle Gardener made her season debut for Welly’s and eased the pressure off of Chloe Powery while Scimone Campbell carried Island Heritage.
