Champs set to storm the diamond

In roughly two weeks, the latest softball champions can start their title defense.

The Cayman Islands Little League Association is expected to begin its 2014 Winter Adult Coed Softball League on Jan. 20. The Field of Dreams will host the captains meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 8.

Alan Markoff returns as coed softball coordinator and mentioned in a recent association report that the upcoming season will “see a revival of the ‘D’ division for those new to the game.” Markoff has previously tried to institute the segment and said in the past that it’s about attracting more players.

“The D-League is more about having fun and social interaction in a social setting,” Markoff said. “There is a competitive element to it, but not to the same degree as our other leagues. We’d really like to see some new faces out on the field this season.

“In the past, teams that have joined the D-League usually continued playing year after year, with some of them even moving up to higher leagues as they gain experience.”

Heading into the new campaign, all eyes will be on last year’s winners. KPMG repeated as A division winners with Andrew Blevins and company defeating Baron Solomon and the Tower Marketing Titans in the final. Daniel Kirkconnell and the Rackam’s Crabbies defied the odds to nab the B division crown by beating Andy Armstrong and the Al La Kebab Hitmen in a close final. Dart, behind veteran pitcher Tim Sullivan, rebounded from a major mid-season skid to claim the C division title by taking down Karl Preuss and the UBS Aces.

A number of teams also enjoyed noteworthy campaigns. In the B segment, Brad Watts and the Phoenix Hard Hats came within a game of the finals after a forgettable regular season campaign while Kenneth Davis and the BritCay Premiums were a tough out throughout the year.

The C ranks saw Jordan Stubblefield and Saxon G-Force put up a good fight to finish second during the regular season.
