Foster’s evacuates Savannah store

Customers were evacuated from the Foster’s Food Fair supermarket at Countryside Shopping Village in Savannah late Wednesday afternoon due to a smell of gas on the premises.

Two fire trucks from the Cayman Islands Fire Service, one parked at the front of the store and the other at the back, were on standby as officers checked the inside and outside of the store for any signs of a fire.

Customers leaving the store between 5:30 and 6 p.m. said a strong smell of gas seemed to be coming from the store’s air conditioning system.

Kafara Augustine, Foster’s Foood Fair marketing manager said, “It was a false alarm. We thought it was a freon leak, but it wasn’t. We evacuated the store as a precaution. It turns out it was just a small gasoline spill from the power washer outside the store.”

Security officers informed incoming customers that the store was temporarily closed.

The store reopened within an hour, a spokesperson for Foster’s said.
