Abigail Stoddart, 21, has been a star in school, in sports and in her community.
She is among the young people recognized by the government’s Proud of Them initiative, which focuses on the positive achievements of residents between the ages of 10 and 25.
Individuals are nominated by the public and honored in the categories of academics, careers, business, sports, culture or community service. Each person selected is featured for six months on billboards across the Cayman Islands and receives a certificate and $500.
Ms Stoddart is in her second year at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, where she is studying accounting and finance. She is ranked in the top 1 percentile at the university and was among those invited to attend President Barack Obama’s inauguration ceremony in Washington, D.C., in January 2013, though she had to decline due to commitments to her studies.
In 2009 she had earned a spot at the Global Youth Leadership Conference in Washington, a 10-day program aimed at helping students gain the confidence, independence, skills and global competiveness required of the next generation of leaders.
Ms Stoddart was recently awarded the KPMG prize for the best student (in year two) at the University of Aberdeen.
When she’s home, Ms Stoddart is an active member of the Leo Club of Grand Cayman and volunteers for various projects throughout the community. In the summer, she splits her time between Rawlinson & Hunter, which also awarded her a corporate scholarship, volunteering with the Youth Services Unit’s Sizzling Summer Camps, and relaxing with family and friends.
After maintaining a 3.8 GPA during her years at George Hicks High School, Stoddart attended John Gray High School, where she was a prefect in her last year and participated in many Junior Achievement programs. She graduated with nine higher level passes and was on the honor roll for her three years at the school.
She was also a member of the John Gray Stingers netball team and captained the basketball team, helping to lead them to the women’s division one championship in Cayman.
She then moved on to Cayman Prep and High School to purse her A level studies. There, Ms Stoddart earned several subject awards and was ranked the highest achieving student on a government scholarship.
