Quirky costumes aim to draw customers

A number of businesses are putting people in costumes on street corners as a way of advertising

Businesses in the Cayman Islands are putting a new twist on advertising during tough economic times.

Cayman Yellow Pages recently had people dressed as brides, clowns, nurses, beauty technicians, chefs and other characters to promote the distribution of the 2014 Yellow Pages telephone directory.

All of the workers on the streets wearing costumes seemed to be having a good time with the entertaining way of advertising.

Salvino Thomas, on the corner of Shedden Road, and Nicola Silburn and Opal Stewart on Walkers Road, posed happily for photographs as they waved, and pointed at the brightly colored placards to get motorists’ attention.

Yellow Pages Marketing Manager Eileen Keens said the costumed characters are meant to bring awareness to the Yellow Pages, “so we put together an event with 36 characters on six different intersections around the island.”

She said the company decided to highlight some of the most-searched categories, such as restaurants, doctors, party supplies, wedding supplies and beauty salons, and dressed up the characters accordingly to create excitement for the product.

“We wanted to have fun while letting people know that the Yellow Pages are on their side. Not only do we help people find things, but we also help businesses in this tough economy to get [themselves] out there,” said Ms Keen.

Other businesses on island have taken to the same idea.

Domino’s Pizza, for instance, stages people dressed in silly costumes to let motorists know about special discounts.

Cayman politicians also have had people dressed in party colors and T-shirts with slogans during election time.
