Dms squashes KPMG

Local squash continues to showcase talent.

Round two of the Security Centre Squash League got under way at South Sound Squash Club and it was dms who made their mark, attacking their opponents and jumping to the top spot on the leaderboard. Jeff Jones of dms started the team off with a well-earned 3-1 victory over KPMG Kobras C string, Kevin Brett.

The D String saw Clare Smith overcome Zac Sharp, 3-0. The B position brought together a very strong player for dms, Jorge Vera, and a good talent in Seb Poznanski of KPMG, but it was one-way traffic for dms. That just left the A position and the team captains to battle it out. Neil Stonewigg of dms kept the ball rolling as his strong victory over Samantha Hennings secured a clean sweep of the individual matches. KPMG managed to claim the doubles battle at the end to prevent a maximum points defeat.

Another notable match-up featured SIR AXISS (Sothebys & Axiss International Management) defeating a steady UBS team. Corbus Pietersen of UBS gained the only victory in the individual match-ups against Sheena Conolly. Both the B and D string for UBS were outplayed by SIR AXISS players Dwight Dube and Charlie Pait, both 3-0. The A position was a much different affair as Stephen Gilbert (SIR AXISS) found himself two games down against the fast and agile Cory Scruggs of UBS.

The third game went to tie break with Gilbert facing a 3-0 loss, but he defended remarkably well and managed to hang in there to win the contest, 12-10. He managed to take this momentum forward into the fourth encounter and it was the younger chap who started to wane as Gilbert claimed the game 11-4. The fifth and final game was outrageous; it was as if it wasn’t possible for Gilbert to make a mistake! Whatever he tried, came off and he ran away with the game and the match, 11-0.
