The intensity of the Burger King Coed Flag Football League went up a few notches this past weekend under the bright lights of the Ed Bush stadium in West Bay.
A bunch of games went down to the wire that resulted in some thrilling finishes. In the storied game of the week, WestStar shocked Maples, 19-14, during a spirited bout. The potent duo of Kevin Morales and Jessica Ebanks were again the driving forces for the cable television specialists.
They controlled the game with their patented dual quarterback illusion sets, which appeared to keep Maples off balance during the course of the game. They also got a high motor performance from Timothy Coulton, whose finger prints were left all over the box score.
For Maples, Fabio Gall hooked up with his favorite receiver, Rupert Whittaker, late in game to thrust them ahead 14-13. Unfortunately, they left just enough time on the clock for WestStar to snatch the win from the jaws of defeat. Slippery Morales managed to outflank Maples defense and broke off a short pass up the sideline for a 45-yard, game-clinching touchdown.
Second round contests saw dual-threat quarterback Baron Solomon and his Pizza Hut crew stun Glenn Duran Jr. and the Cronies, 25-21. It was one of those performances for Pizza Hut where they were clicking on all cylinders from the outset. Their receivers, Peter Whittaker and Camille Solomon, were consistently finding the soft spot within the Cronies defense and Baron, with his unconventional delivery, showed great touch and accuracy on his throws.
Such offensive efficiency inspired the Pizza Hut defense, led by cornerback Ryan Ebanks who kept the Cronies off the scoreboard in the first half. This triggered a lot of frustration and patchy officiating outcries by the Cronies squad who may have come into the game overconfident. To their credit, they showed some resolve in the second half behind the prowess of Cueme Parker and Jen Cotarelo, when they ran off 21 unanswered points. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t be enough as Baron delivered in the clutch, this time as a recipient of a gorgeous TD throw by Whittaker to pull off the upset.
On the opposite field, the upstart Wakeboard Cayman got their first win of the season by shutting out Walkers, 13-0. Guided by veteran quarterback Chris LeBeau, Wakeboard opened up a few eyes with their vertical passing game featuring the shifty James Ort. The high-spirited crew also got some quality play from the likes of Danna Hickey and Sarie Smith, who were instrumental throughout.
For Walkers, it was a disappointing showing by the unpolished squad. There seems to be a lack of stability at the quarterback position, which has hampered their ability to sustain drives. As a result, they have not reached the end zone all season, which is starting to affect the team’s overall moral. They will look to get off the snide against Robbie Cribb’s Cayman Auto Diagnostics gang this week.
In the ensuing and final game of the night, KPMG got a much-needed victory by defeating Burger King, 26-18. Robert Hendrich took the snaps for KPMG and brought some life to the squad, throwing an impressive four TD passes. Three of those tosses were to Steve Taylor and the other was to Jay Robinson. For Burger King, it has been a substandard season thus far for the seasoned bunch, who are surprisingly 0-3 and in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. They have simply been unable to put together a complete game, which has led to their defeats being for different reasons. Any chance of a successful turnaround will fall in the capable hands and feet of Gary Rutty, Sean Moyle, Betsy Smith and Ryan Smith.
To round up last week’s action, Adrean Russell threw multiple TDs to help Wok-N-Roll beat Jordan Stubblefield and Los Terroristas, 28-21 while Becky and Chris Lucas propelled Impressions Beauty Salon to an early lead to knock off Jamie Stephen and CrossFit7Mile, 26-18. Nicholas Roberts and Andro Elevator outlasted Matt Bone, Kristopher Brand and Duke’s late rally to win, 20-14, and Higgs and Johnson thumped Jerry Beck and Kirk Freeport, 33-12, behind Tonia Ebanks-McLaughlin’s big night on defense.
The heart of the schedule for most teams will play out over the next month as games gradually become more important. This weekend, the most notable match-up features the incumbent A and B division champions, Burger Shack and Wok-N-Roll, respectively, will kick start the midseason push. Perennial stalwarts like Perry Levy, Barrett Edri and Cassandra Bodden of Burger Shack and Phil Brown, David Taylor and Alexandra Terry of Wok-N-Roll will square off in this all-important game. Both teams have yet to play their best football to date so this will be another opportunity to restore their upper echelon prominence.
Baron Solomon of Pizza Hut and Tonia Ebanks-McLaughlin of Higgs and Johnson were recognized as the men’s and women’s players of the week.
