Charterland back to former glory

After a season of indifferent form, team Charterland has returned to their old ways on the court.

Heading into round five of the seven-week regular season for division two of the Digicel National Men’s League, Charterland sits in first place with a 4-0 record. The latest victory for the veteran crew was a 78-65 assault of Smoothie King. Will Koutney led the winners with 28 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Ovaine Monteith’s 14 points, Ryne Staback’s 13 points and Chris Levers’s 10 points. Andrew Diaz was top scorer for the losing side with 19 points, followed by John Paul Azul with 16 points.

At this point, Charterland is on pace to make their 2013 campaign a distant memory. The surveyors, who won the title in 2012 and 2011, went 4-4 last year, barely made the postseason in fourth place and were bounced out of the playoffs in the first round by overall champions Game Takers.

Charterland plays their next game on March 18 against the Rock Hole Fire Ants at Camana Bay’s Arts and Recreation Center from 7:30 p.m. Rock Hole, ranked eighth out of eight teams at 0-4, are coming off a 72-59 defeat at the hands of the 2-2 NEC Titans. Darrell Paddyfoot nabbed 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Titans, Dino Hydes contributed 17 points and Kadane Hall chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds. Radhames Polanco netted 18 points and 10 rebounds for Fire Ants, Maxwell Linwood scored 16 points and Leroy Stewart delivered 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Smoothie King, second in the standings at 3-1, play their next game on March 20 against 1-2 Team Philippines. The contest features some of Cayman’s best shooters as Darwin Mancenido, Carlo Manuel and Paul Villanueva all play for the Philippines squad.
