Every now and then a writer to this paper says something about the dump and because they give support to the present government, either openly or deceitfully, they say “all past governments are to blame” but glibly say the present government only now has to deal with it.
Where have they been living? Or do they believe that their “chosen government” is doing so poorly that while they cannot support them in this matter, they can put salve on the open wound by saying “all past governments are to blame”?
The fact is that from between 1989-1992, North Side MLA Ezzard Miller tried for a solution but the people did not support it. Therefore the House did not support it. The government between 1992-1996 tried also but the people did not support that either.
2001-2005: Huge discussions — nothing happened.
2005-2009: Money spent on studies, visits, committees were appointed — but the whole proposal would be too costly, and government had no money.
2009-2013: UDP looks at and evaluates the dangers to the country and asked the Dart Group to put up a proposal. Dart Group was the only one who showed proof of funding. They were the only ones who came up with a viable plan of remediation — proper lining for the garbage — and a recycling programme. They bought land with sufficient buffers for the new waste management facility.
So the UDP tried and found a workable solution. I didn’t see much support in letters to the Compass then. The PPM and others fought against it, yet they still have not found the answer, in spite of so much work done in the past. So, for anyone to say that no previous government tried to do anything, goes beyond fair comment.
How one-sided and hypocritical can anyone be! No one tried or listened? Which world do they live in?
However, truth is, one thing for certain that we agree on: The toxic elements and the hazardous material in fires and leaching into the North Side and water table, at a hazardous level to humankind, far beyond and exceeds any acceptable international standards of public safety and good health.
The long-term health effects will never be quantified, and without doubt, are leading and continue to feed disease.
The UDP came up with a plan to mitigate this continuing man-made disaster. For anyone to say otherwise, is not telling the truth and is most hypocritical.
They can say they didn’t support the UDP, me, or the plan, but they cannot say that “no government tried to do anything.” That is simply not true!
