Students host event to connect with employers

More than 30 students networked with local employers at an event organized by Cayman Connection U.K., a nonprofit group solely run by Caymanian students.

The event, which was held at the National Gallery last week, drew more than 50 people. It usually takes place in the U.K. to provide a platform for Caymanian students to stay connected there.

“We get to meet people. Our main goal at the end of the day was to connect with employers on island. Being away at school in the U.K. means it is hard to do that,” said Moya Williams, who belongs to a smaller group, Cayman Student Ambassadors, which represents Cayman Connection.

“Last week, we got in touch with a few sixth formers from Cayman Prep and High School, and they got to learn about what we do, and how it might be beneficial to them in the future.”

The event is supported by the Cayman Islands government and the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, and is affiliated with the Friends of Cayman group in the U.K.

Among some of the guests were Governor Helen Kilpatrick, Osbourne Bodden, minister responsible for youth, and culture, and Rosa Harris, director of tourism.

“[There were] a lot of students there, and we all got to speak with the Governor … We also had our sponsors there, and they were all keen to get to know the students, and see who was involved,” said Ms. Williams, 19.

Ms. Williams is studying toward a bachelor’s degree in advertising and marketing communication at the University of Greenwich in London. She said in her role as a Cayman Student Ambassador, she has learned a few skills in her chosen field.

“That’s why I enjoy being an ambassador. We get to do something that is in line with our career aspirations for the future. The best part, though, is it’s just done by us students…we get to make the final decision,” she said.

Ms. Williams is one of about 100 in the Cayman Student Ambassadors group.

“I am truly proud of the hard work the student ambassadors put in to making this first event such a success,” said Ken Millwood, Cayman Connection events and entertainment manager.

“We are grateful for the support we have received thus far and look forward to working together to further grow this organization. The network is starting to feel like a family where the gravitational centre is the Caymanian spirit and strong connection with our U.K. brethren.”
