Through sheer determination, Appleby staved off both threatening skies and challenges to their leader board position to claim the inaugural North Sound Golf Club Corporate League championship last Saturday.
The team, led by Fiona Crellin and Brian Ross, swept the series with many wins. In addition to a trophy and bragging rights for the 11 months until the second annual NSGC summer league, the winning Appleby team will enjoy a celebratory Sunday brunch at Michael’s Genuine in Camana Bay.
More than 70 players from first timers to low handicappers participated in the six-week social series, which pitted a two-ball from each participating company against each other in nine holes of alternate shot match play. Each team included at least one female golfer per match, and every week saw a mix of veteran players, new golf enthusiasts and even a few first time players.
The Summer 2014 NSGC corporate league was sponsored by Ulysse Nardin, the Swiss watch manufacturer.
Unfortunately, no player was lucky enough to hit a hole in one in the final match to claim the title sponsor’s Perpetual Calendar 322-10 valued at $52,000. Michelob Ultra also sponsored the league with post-match rounds.
“Our first corporate league was a huge success,” said Jeff Sauvage, general manager of the North Sound Golf Club.
“The social competition helped create new friendships, and we expect to see more companies signing up teams for the next season.”
