Ramon Sealy and Corey Cato are wrapping up an impressive season in England, playing semi-professionally in the Lancashire County League.
Sealy, especially, has had a marvelous season with Thornham, near Manchester, scoring 539 runs and notching 27 dismissals as wicketkeeper.
One of the highlights of the season was that Thornham made the James A Walkden Cup semifinal, which was the first time that had happened since 2007, Sealy said. The 23-year-old Caymanians can certainly take some credit for that success.
Thornham also did the double over a rival club, Prestwich, which also had not happened for a while.
Sealy said that they have coped with the weather well. “It was cold when we first came over, but we have adjusted and the weather is not a problem now,” he said.
For fast bowler Cato it was not easy at first because the pitches are slower than in Cayman and he had to take time to adjust with the weather, but he has still managed 22 wickets.
He has also performed well with the bat, scoring a total of 120 runs.
This was Sealy’s second time playing cricket in England. He went on the Police Cricket Club tour seven years ago, playing in five games. “My abiding memories will be the learning experience that I have gone through over here and the adjustments I had to make coming over from Cayman.
“The time and experiences with my teammates and members of the club are memories that I wont forget. The cup run to the semifinal will also be memorable.”
Sealy is a Cayman Islands national goalkeeper in football as well.
He said his sporting ambitions are to come back to Cayman this month and continue to develop in both sports. “I’m hoping to come back to England next year to continue my cricket development but will see what happens,” he said.
Sealy so impressed the Thornham management, he even captained the side.
“It was an honor, and although we didn’t get the results that we would have liked, I still had fun leading the side,” he said.
“It also gave the club a chance to look at my leadership qualities and handling different situations. “I was also able to learn more about my teammates from a different perspective, and I hope to captain again in the future.”
Bodden Town Football Club’s first choice keeper, he will jump back into training in preparation for the upcoming season. “I will also have no break from cricket as I have national training for the Cayman team for an upcoming tour in November in Bahamas.”
