Dyer, 15, set to be Fidelity king

The Fidelity Fun Run Series got the final stretch of this year’s road races under way on Saturday.

It is an annual series of 2-mile runs held on three successive Saturday mornings.

The predictable winner was Dominic Dyer, only 15 but a tremendous talent, coached by running vets Derek Larner and Marius Acker.

Dyer finished in 10 minutes, 31 seconds. Dave Walker was second (10:56) and third place was a photo finish between Tahj Lewis and Marlon Crowe Jr. Lewis was given the nod but both were given a time of 10:58.

Jane Hale-Smith (12:29) was the fastest woman, 22nd overall. Tiffany Cole was second fastest female and Julia Storrer third.

A total of 257 runners registered for this one, which started a few minutes later than the scheduled 7:30 a.m. on Walkers Road because of the new chip system for all runners, installed by Race Caribbean’s Larner.

Walker was intending to compete in the stroller division and even warmed up pushing his baby.

But his competitive instincts got the better of him and he entered the regular race, leaving wife Tracey holding – and then pushing – the baby.

The race director was Jerry Harper.

Larner said, “It was a bit frantic before the race from the point of view of having to register over 200 people with chips in the hour before the race.

“I want to give a shout out to Trevor Murphy, Claire Griffin and Laura Manson who did a fantastic job getting registration done so quickly.”

Larner’s many other kids who he coaches recorded some of the day’s fastest times. He was pleased that so many finished under 12 minutes.

Larner has high hopes for Dyer in next year’s CARIFTAs, hoping he medals in the 3,000 meters.

Dyer was fourth in this year’s CARIFTAs and will be in the same age group next time.

The second Fidelity Fun Run is this Saturday, at 7.30 a.m. again.
