Murder suspect arrested in West Bay

Royal Cayman Islands Police officers arrested a West Bay man Tuesday evening in connection with the killing of Special Olympics athlete Solomon Webster last weekend.

The 27-year-old was arrested on suspicion of murder. The Cayman Compass is not naming him because he had not been charged at press time.

RCIPS officers also arrested a second man, age 60, on suspicion of aiding and abetting the suspect in the alleged murder. Both men were being held by police as of press time Wednesday.

Sunday night’s killing in the Logwoods area of West Bay was not related to gang activity, according to a statement released by the police service Tuesday.

“The RCIPS would like to emphasize that the death of Solomon David Webster is not believed to be gang related,” the police statement noted.

Mr. Webster, 24, was shot in the groin area at around 8:30 p.m. Sunday, according to police reports. He was taken by private car to a local clinic immediately after the shooting and then transferred to the Cayman Islands hospital where he died from the gunshot injury, police said.

Mr. Webster and the suspected shooter were believed to have been involved in an altercation earlier on Sunday.

Although Mr. Webster had been before the mental health court in the past, he was not considered by police to be a gang member in either the Logwoods crew or any other West Bay group, police sources indicated.

Mr. Webster, who won gold for the Cayman Islands in bocce in Puerto Rico in 2010 and was also a keen footballer and basketball player, was shot near his home on Miss Daisy Lane.

Representatives from the Cayman Islands Special Olympics Committee said they were “shocked and saddened” by the “senseless” killing.
