Cayman’s fledgling golfers competed for the title of Junior Island Champion at the North Sound Club over the weekend.
The championships were organized by the Cayman Islands Golf Association together with the club staff and it was sponsored by local company HighWater.
There were a number of competitions to take account both of the ages of the golfers involved and how long they have been playing the game.
The two-day, 36-hole championship featured several of the national team members who last played competitive golf when they represented Cayman in Puerto Rico recently.
Some great scores were recorded and the results were very close:
Boys 14-and-over low gross winner was Joe Purton (80 and 69), second was Andrew Jarvis (74 and 78) and Conor O’Dea (84 and 72) was third.
Boys Under-14 gross winner was Justin Hasting on count back (79 and 73), second was Aaron Jarvis (74 and 78) and Jordan Trickett (94 and 90) placed third.
Purton was also the overall winner of the boys low net.
Players with less golfing experience took part in either 9 or 18 hole competitions on Sunday.
Girls 18 holes winner was Karinya Linford, who beat Jen Purton for second and Holly McLean into third place.
Boys 9 holes champ was Harrison Clough with Oskar Bjuroe second.
Girls 9 holes winner was Gia Champoux and Charlize Keens was second.
Golf association president Jason Perras congratulated all the youngsters for their performances and expressed his hope that this new annual event will go from strength to strength.
He also thanked the club for their continued support and working with the junior golfers and the golf association committee members Siobhan Ribbins and James Walton, who have nurtured the juniors, for all their hard work at this event and over the year generally.
Perras also praised the volunteers who helped to make the day such a big success and HighWater for their sponsorship and commitment to the event for the next couple of years.
