Sister special constables sought

Residents in the sister islands are being given the opportunity help keep their communities as safe as possible by volunteering for the Special Constabulary.

The Royal Cayman Islands Police Service is looking to recruit new members to the extended law enforcement family.

The Special Constabulary provides effective and efficient operational support to the RCIPS, thereby enhancing the quality of service to the public and assisting the RCIPS to achieve its policing objectives. Made up of unpaid volunteers recruited from within the community, the Constabulary is dedicated to serving and protecting the Cayman Islands.

When on duty, special constables have the same powers as full time members of the RCIPS and wear a very similar uniform.

‘Anyone volunteering can expect to be involved in many different aspects of policing, from assisting at public events to providing operational support by performing regular police duties, under the supervision of full time officers of the RCIPS,’ said Area Commander Chief Inspector Patrick Beersingh. ‘Although sometimes demanding, it’s a very rewarding job.’

Mr. Beersingh also highlighted that volunteers can choose the hours they work to fit around work or family commitments. ‘It’s a flexible way of giving something back to the community. In addition, working as a special constable can develop great friendships and a real sense of belonging within a community.’

In July 2007, 11 special constables graduated in Cayman Brac. Anyone interested in joining the Cayman Brac or Little Cayman Special Constabulary should contact their local police station for application forms. It is hoped training will begin in May so completed forms should be returned by Friday, 2 May. Applicants should be healthy and have a reasonable physical fitness level, able to read and write the English language well, should have no criminal convictions and a strong desire to serve their community.
