All 16 hurricane shelters on Grand Cayman will open at 8am, with total room for just over 4,000 people. Officials are urging people to arrive early and to bring three-day’s worth of food, water, medicines and other essential supplies.
The elderly and those with special medical needs are being asked to go to the shelter in their district designated as an Emergency Medical Centre.
‘If you have a well constructed house, it’s advisable to stay there or stay with relatives or friends that do. If you live in a vulnerable area, you should leave,’ said Deanna Look Loy, manager for shelter operations.
‘We want people to be on their best behaviour in the shelters,’ she said. ‘They will be amongst many people of many nationalities … We expect people to cooperate and to help us out.’
