A 59-year-old man died Tuesday snorkelling off Royal Reef Resort, East End.
At around 3pm, the 911 Emergency Communications Centre received a call from a Tortuga Divers employee reporting that a snorkeler had been reported missing. A search for the man had already begun by the time officers were called.
Shortly after the 911 report was made, the snorkeler was located unconscious in the water. He was taken to shore and under the direction of 911 operators, CPR was conducted until medics arrived.
The man was later taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
He had been on vacation in Grand Cayman with friends and was from the United States.
The tourist’s death is the seventh watersports-related fatality to occur in the Cayman Islands this year.
