CUC Power Restoration in Process Following Hurricane Paloma

Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands – Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. is in the process of restoring power to the island of Grand Cayman following the passing overnight of Hurricane Paloma. Crews will be working throughout the day to assess and repair damage to the transmission and distribution system.

CUC President and CEO, Richard Hew stated, ‘We are pleased that we were able to provide service to most of the island throughout the storm. While the specific damage from a hurricane is largely unpredictable, our preparation and response plans have been effective in minimizing outages’. He added, ‘While we wish we could keep all power on throughout this type of event, high winds and heavy rain make safe response by line crews impossible.’

CUC estimates that it was able to maintain power to over 60% of the island throughout the storm and has restored power to over 15% of those customers affected by outages.

We remind the residents of Grand Cayman to exercise extreme caution when exposed to downed power lines, poles and flooded areas where power is on. We also ask that they give way to our line crews attempting to reach trouble spots through the day and drive slowly when passing these workers.

If you continue to experience outages in areas other than those listed below, please call CUC’s outage hotline at 945-1282. If you encounter downed lines, please contact 911 for emergency response.

Our long service employee base and training programs have produced a very capable human resource which is integral to our reliability.’

We thank our many customers who called our outage hotline to advise of local outages and allow us to prioritize our response. We appreciate the understanding and cooperation of our customers island wide while we restore service.
