NS Heritage Day moved to Lions

Pirates Week Heritage Day for North Side has been moved to the Lions Centre today.

‘It was either that or cancel the whole thing,’ said organiser Mel McCoy.

He said too many people have spent time and money preparing perishable food for the Heritage Day and he could not let those efforts or expense go to waste.

The North Side Heritage Day is typically held at the public beach at Kaibo in North Side. It was to be held there today.

Hurricane Paloma, which blew into Grand Cayman Friday, dumped a huge amount of rain on the Island, including Kaibo where the main road remains flooded in parts. Huge potholes have also formed on the road leading into the public beach.

‘If you don’t know how to drive to get into that entrance, you could hurt yourself,’ he said.

The North Side Heritage Day Committee has for the past several years asked Government for a proper pumping system at the Kaibo Beach entrance to drain the area of standing water. While a pump was delivered last year, it wasn’t properly installed and for the past three years the committee has had to pay for a workable system.

‘It’s not fair for the committee to be burdened with this year after year,’ he said. ‘We just can’t afford it.’

There are no other venues at North Side to host the Heritage Day.

Mr. McCoy said efforts were made to secure the Civic Centre or the playfield, but were unsuccessful.

‘I know, North Side Heritage Day at the Lions Centre doesn’t sound right. As much as we hate doing this, we’re just against the wall,’ he said.

He is asking for the public to support the decision to make the move.

As usual there will be local food from North Side cooks, face painting, a bouncy castle, Earl La Pierre’s Steel Pan Band, the North Side Kitchen band, Coco Red, Image and Company and other performers as well as a full bar service beginning at 4pm.

The event is free to the public until 6pm when a $10 cover charge will go into effect.

The only thing this year’s North Side Heritage Day will be without are the fireworks display and the bon fire.

Gates open at the
Lions Centre at 11am.
