The Cayman Islands Humane Society’s Foster Care Programme is in need of volunteers.
The number of shelter animals in need of temporary homes is at a critical level.
The Foster Care Programme requires members of the public to care for dogs, cats, kittens or puppies on a short term basis.
Animals that are recovering from surgery or are receiving medication especially need calm environments in which to recuperate.
‘Animals come to the shelter from all walks of life, some are suffering from heartworm disease or mange, others may be injured or abused and require surgery,’ said Director Clare Hasart.
‘A home is the best place for these animals to receive the one-on-one attention they require during their recovery time.’
Kittens and puppies that arrive without a mother and are not yet weaned also need foster parents to bottle feed and care for them.
‘During Hurricane Season we need people who are willing to take animals for a couple of days until the danger from a storm has passed,’ said Foster Care Programme Manager, Philippa Walsh.
Becoming a foster parent is especially satisfying for those who cannot have a pet full time but still want to enjoy the companionship of a dog or cat.
Foster parent, Khatidja McLean, said: ‘There aren’t many things in life as satisfying and fulfilling as taking care of an animal that needs your help. Life is so precious and the opportunity and gift of giving life is simply priceless,’
All equipment required, including crates, cat carriers, litter trays, bowls, collars and leashes, can be supplied if needed, and full training and instruction will be offered.
There are numerous dogs at the shelter on a waiting list for a foster home so they can begin their heartworm treatment.
