New York Yankees took their spending to an astonishing $250million in one week when they snapped up pitcher AJ Burnett.
The Yankees – embarrassed at missing out on the play-offs last season for the first time in 14 years – have already tied up pitcher CC Sabathia to a stunning $161million, seven-year contract.
They added Burnett, who agreed a five-year deal worth $82.5million.
Burnett, 31, was an 18-game winner for Toronto Blue Jays last season, getting the decision in 10 of his final 12 games of the year.
He ended with a 4.07 ERA and set career highs in wins, strikeouts (231) and innings pitched (221 1/3). He joins a rotation that includes Sabathia, Wang Chien-ming and Joba Chamberlain.
Meanwhile, the Chicago White Sox have signed 19-year-old Cuban defector Dayan Viciedo to a four-year, $10million contract. The third baseman gets a $4m signing-on bonus.
