Clarke sizzled in Hong Kong

Rugby prodigy Josh Clarke did Cayman Islands proud competing for the West Indies sevens side in Hong Kong last week.

The youngster was originally a substitute for the West Indies squad but got drafted in at the last minute. And he did well, starting in every game and even scoring a try against the powerful United States.

Clarke is only 20 and developing into an impressive, well rounded player.

Proud dad Stephen said: ‘The West Indies team did very well. They were narrowly beaten by Kenya, 17-10 and they lost to the US 17-7. Then they were narrowly beaten by Scotland, 19-17, which was a great result. Then they played Uruguay and lost again not by a big margin, 21-12.

‘They had a great team and got lots of respect from other teams. This was the first time the West Indies were in that tournament for eight years and they got a lot of positive comments and really motivated them to push forward.

‘Considering Josh only got in at late notice he did very well. He played in every game, trained hard and made a good impression. I spoke to Josh this morning and he said how good the team spirit was and how hard everyone worked for each other.’

Clarke, who is a coach on Cayman’s Under-20s World Cup trip to Kenya from Saturday, added: ‘The next big sevens tournament from Cayman’s point of view is Mexico.

‘We’re looking to have not just people with a good mix of experience but we’ve got a lot of good youth coming through so we’ll have a high expectation of doing well.’
