Anyone interested in getting fit or
if they are preparing for a serious sporting event before Christmas, should get
down to Walkers Road on Saturday morning.
The fourth annual Breeze Fusion Two
Mile Walk/Run is on and is open to all comers, sporty types or not. Organised by Radio Cayman, Breeze FM and The
Phoenix Athletic Club, it has grown enormously in popularity and participation,
including many
visitors to the island.
Since the first staging in 2007,
the National Council for Voluntary Organisations —an independent, non-profit,
charitable organisation which engages in projects to meet the ever-growing
needs of the community—has been the signature charity of the event. In
addition, a second charity is chosen each year. This year the Lions’ Club of
Grand Cayman Children’s Christmas Social will benefit.
The race is open to recreational as
well as competitive athletes of all ages and is designed to encourage community
and international participation, promoting wellness and healthy lifestyles.
Categories range from under-12 to over-60, including pram-pushers.
The last opportunity to register
will be on the morning of the event from 6:45am for a 7:30am start. Registration
fee is only $15 for adults and $10 for children under 16. The first 140
participants will receive an event T-shirt. In addition, participant medals and
a gift will be given to the first 75 runners/50 walkers as well as first,
second and third place finishers in each category. Trophies will be awarded to
the overall male and female winners.
There will also be random prizes.
Look out for the registration Location at the entrance to Cayman Prep
School on Walkers Road.
The race route also begins at the
Cayman Prep School entrance, going south along Walkers Road, right on to South
Church Street proceeding in a south-westerly direction. Competitors make the
final turn at the junction of South Church Street and Denham Thompson Way
taking participants east for
the finish line.
Overall male and female defending
champions are David Walker (2009) and Beth Schreader (2008 & 2009). Race
organisers are determined that the race must go on and remain positive that the
weather will be favourable. Prospective participants are encouraged to support
the event not only as a healthy activity, but most importantly to provide well
needed assistance to the NCVO and Lions of Club of
Grand Cayman.
