UCCI nets huge event

One of Cayman’s colleges is serving
as a venue for sports more and more these days. The latest event taking place
at the institution is courtesy of volleyball.

The Cayman Islands Volleyball
Federation is putting on an indoor tournament later this month. The 2010 Cayman
Airways Spikefest Invitational competition runs 26-28 November at the Sir
Vassel Johnson Hall at the University College of the Cayman Islands.

A number of local teams and players
are slated to compete. In addition a travel side from New York will be in
attendance. Local sports figure Fareed Hosein is an organiser for the
tournament and states the event is part of the federation’s goal of making
Cayman a solid locale for volleyball, both at a local and international level.

“I will be in charge of the
officiating crew and there are six men’s teams and four women’s teams,” Hosein
said. “The tournament is part of the ongoing process by the federation to
promote the Cayman Islands as a sports tourism destination for both beach and
indoor volleyball. Also we’re looking to promote a strong volleyball program
and presence in Cayman for future youth development.”

The registration period for the
tournament ended last week. Hosein stated in passing that two of Cayman’s
biggest volleyball stars in grizzled veterans Olney Thompson and Shervin Rankin
are expected to take part.
