Pawlik backs Team USA

Cayman’s flag football scene is
gaining in reputation throughout the region, which is why for the second year
in succession they are involved in an international tournament this weekend.

The Cayman Islands Flag Football
Association will host the Caribbean Regional Cup on Saturday and Sunday. Local
league teams formed their own regional sides to compete for the International
Cup last year and a men’s team from the Bahamas came here for the tournament.
This year not only will Cayman host a men’s team from the Bahamas again but a
women’s five-member team is also on its way. Like last year, the International
Cup will be contested between locals who form regional sides from Cayman, USA,
Jamaica, World.

Jessica Pawlik will be playing. The
quarterback and receiver who plays for Team USA in the Caribbean Regional Cup,
fancies her chances. She said: “We have a great group of ladies and great
coaches so I think we’ll do very well but we’re just going out there to have
fun and play football. The unique thing about the Caribbean Regional Cup is
that this gives you the opportunity to make your team the absolute best so I
think that the competition is going to be quite high and there are going to be
a lot of entertaining and high scoring games. Team USA has a great group of talented
players so we’re confident that we will do well.

“This is an excellent opportunity
for us to grow the sport in the Caribbean and we are thrilled to have the
Bahamas join us for the first time in the women’s division. It is our hope that
next year more teams will travel from various other countries.

“It is definitely more fun to play
in the CRC because all year you play against your friends but now you have the
opportunity to play with them and that’s a beautiful thing.”
