Caymanian model and Victoria Secret catwalk queen was in Cayman over the weekend for a photo shoot for luxury glossy magazine UPTOWN.
Sites for the shoot included Boggy Sand Road, off of West Bay Road, where Selita donned a multi-coloured chiffon dress by New York designer Vivenne Tam, and Pedro Castle.
The model – who shot to celebrity status in 2005 when supermodel Tyra Banks personally handed over her Victoria’s Secret Angel Wings to her – personally requested that the shoot take place in Cayman. It was originally slated to take place in Antigua and then Puerto Rico.
‘It’s always special being back in Cayman,’ Selita said during a break on the fashion shoot Saturday. ‘I don’t get that many opportunities to come home, so it’s always nice when I do. Everyone has been really welcoming.’
Recently it was widely reported in the media that the model had wed Nick Cannon in Las Vegas after a brief month-long courtship.
Talking to the Caymanian Compass at the fashion shoot, Selita firmly quashed any marriage rumours.
‘I am very happy and very much in love. I am not married,’ she said. ‘If I ever do get married its going to be huge and all of Cayman will know first – I may even have to organise a whole Selita Ebanks carnival,’ she quipped.
Asked how she is handling fame, Selita said she feels she is doing well.
‘It took me a while to get used to it, but I think I am handling it pretty well now. I have a great team behind me.’
Selita grew up on Walkers Road and attended George Town Primary and George Hicks High School. She moved to New York with her family in her mid-teens where she quickly started to climb the modelling ladder. She has walked the catwalk with the cream of the modelling world, including Naomi Campbell and Heidi Klum.
Commenting on Selita’s request that the shoot should take place in Cayman, the Minister of Tourism Charles Clifford said he is thrilled.
‘We are delighted to welcome Selita home, and are thrilled that she has brought this incredible photo shoot with UPTOWN magazine to our shores. Selita is a role model for young Caymanians. She has worked hard to achieve her successes thus far, and yet she has never forgotten her heritage.’
Launched in 2004 and written for affluent African Americans, UPTOWN magazine covers African American experience including fashion, entertainment, travel, dining, the arts and culture and architecture. Regional editions appear in New York City, Chicago and Atlanta. The circulation is 100,000.
