Voluntary organisations in the Cayman Islands have been invited by government to establish the Voluntary Agencies Disaster Committee.
This committee will be coordinated out of Hazard Management Cayman Islands and will be the focal point for voluntary organisations wishing to assist government with disaster and hazard management-related programmes, including response.
At the committee’s inaugural meeting, it was decided that the committee would be chaired by the Cayman Islands Red Cross. The Lions Club of Grand Cayman is the deputy chair.
The initiative to set up the committee stems from government’s recognition of the good work done by voluntary organisations during Hurricane Ivan and a wish to integrate them into the country’s hazard management programme.
Committee members will have access to HMCI’s training programmes and technical support. In turn they will assist preparedness, response and recovery efforts.
